2012-03-02 – Friday Whisper – You are Free…

You know that you are free to eat what you want, dress how you want, go where you want, watch TV when you want…

In most cases, you are also free to date/love/marry whom you want, befriend whom you want, work with whom you want, talk to whom you want…

Yes, you are free to do all the above, anytime…

What you might know or not know is that you are also free to decide how life events can affect you…

If your spouse is never satisfied with anything you do, if a colleague stabs you in the back at work, if your boss overloads you with tasks, if your friend abuses you, you can decide whether you want to drawn in misery or keep going regardless… Of course you will feel hurt in all the above situations, but how it will affect your life and what your reaction will be is totally up to you… you decide whether you drown in misery, go around screaming or cursing, spend your time crying, dig in emotional eating (then soon start fighting weight gain) or develop a mindset to try to find out a real solution…

For each stimuli there is a response. According to Victor Frankl, an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist, animals associate one response to one stimuli and react the same way every time. Human beings, on the other hand, can choose among different responses to the same stimuli…

Take a simple example, the weather: if it is rainy day, you can decide to feel angry and clumsy or you can imagine how beautiful it will feel when the sun will come out again… that’s our advantage over other creatures, we can imagine situations and feel good about them before they even take place…

Same things happen to all of us, how you respond to it is what makes the difference between you and me.

You decide if you want to behave based on your values rather than based on your feelings… Don’t blame circumstances and conditions… don’t empower them and give them the control over your life…

Eleanor Roosevelt, a former First Lady of the United States, said: “No one can hurt you without your consent”

And Stephen Covey, an American author, said: “We are the creative force of our life, and through our own decisions rather than our conditions, if we carefully learn to do certain things, we can accomplish those goals.”

Decide how things will affect you. Be proactive rather than reactive. Be responsible. Own your life.

Be free to choose…
